From Rustic to Posh

We had a great vegetarian dinner with our host and hostess last night. The amazing part was the fact that no bread was served. It seems our trip has consisted of bread for breakfast, bread for lunch and bread for dinner. Bread, bread and more bread. This morning we were served crepes and homemade blackberry jam for breakfast (no bread).

Our host couple met after they had both completed the Camino in 2011.  They bought this old building that had been vacant for 40 years and are slowly renovating it. He is from the Netherlands and she is from Italy. Her Camino was most interesting. She went with her dog. The first night in Roncesvalles, they wouldn't allow her dog in and she ended up sleeping outside in the rain with a leaking tent with her dog. The temperature was only two degrees Celsius. Things did improve for her after that.

This morning we bade our hosts goodbye and set off in a light rain at 8:00 am.. It was still dark so with our headlamps and flashlights on, we set off up a hill on a rocky trail. As it got light we marvelled at the soft shades of green on the plants and trees. The mist hovered around and over us. It was quite magical.

As were walking through the middle of nowhere we suddenly came across a coke machine. It was quite a shock to see it there.

We arrived in Vilei mid afternoon. Our albergue for tonight is quite different from last night. We are in a room for four people with our own private bath and shower and with towels provided. Plus there are no bunk beds so no one has to climb down in the middle of the night to use the washroom. The term luxury has taken on a whole new meaning.

We have just over 100 km to go so we are beginning to think of the end of our journey. Every day has been amazing in some way. We hope to walk at least part of the way to Finnisterre.
